Masmap Alpha Nightly Build

#1 Post by Noah » Sun May 24, 2009 4:14 pm

Introduction
MasmapNPM is made up of 18 tiles mapped by many mappers. Not all Masmap tiles are updated every day so compilation will only involve changed tiles. Downloading MasmapTiles for these group of Alpha Testers makes more sense as only changed/updated tiles need to be updated for viewing with Mapsource for upload to their GPS devices.

Steps
1. You need TortoiseSVN, Mapsource and MapSetToolkit

2. Create a folder anywhere on your PC and name it binaries. Right-click on your binaries folder and choose SVN Checkout then enter the url: (choose one)
a) Binaries1 (slower) - svn://masmap.org/binaries
b) Binaries2 (faster) - http://masmap.googlecode.com/svn/binaries/

3. Once all the files has been downloaded launch MapsetToolKit and Uninstall your MasmapTiles mapset (FID=87), if you have it installed. If not, ignore this step.
Install.jpg
4. Click on the Install button and
a) for Registry name > type "MasmapTiles"
b) for TDB file > Point to your binaries folder > point to the MasmapTiles.TDB file
c) for Overview map > point to the MasmapTiles.img file
d) for Typ files > point to 10057.typ file

This is how your MapSetToolkit should look like before you proceed: (directory path depends on where you created your binaries folder)
Install MasmapTIles.jpg
5. Click INSTALL (make sure Mapsource isn't running)

Advantage
1. Alpha Testers get updated maps "hot off the oven" daily
2. You do not need to download and install the whole MasmapTiles every time there is a map update. You only need to SVN Update the binaries folder which updates the changed tiles only.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is MasmapNPM Alpha Binaries?
They are compiled map files for Garmin Mapsource, ready to be uploaded to your Garmin GPS receiver. They are used by Alpha Testers to report map errors.

What is the difference between MasmapNPM Alpha and MSM NT?
MasmapNPM Alpha does not have Junction View (JCV), Lane Assist (LA) and Exit Info. MasmapNPM Alpha only covers areas north of latitude 3.3333 which is Perak, Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang.

How old is MSM NT compared to MasmapNPM Alpha?
Typically it is one month old. Many errors has been fixed since then so please do not report errors in MSM NT unless you have counterchecked with MasmapNPM Alpha.

I'm still confused. Which one should I install in my GPS?
If you're a user, please install MSM NT.
If you're an Alpha Tester/Contributor, please install MasmapNPM Alpha.

Here are my comments:

1. You moved a couple of POIs...

... to its correct location (I presume it is correct based on GE) using the Select Tool. This is the right way to move the POIs as I've seen mappers delete the old POI and create a new one losing the POI attributes such as City, Address, Phone number and Postcode. Well done! You just demonstrated your value as a local mapper.

:good:
Before
Before
After
After
2. The road that leads to Penang Port (RoadID=10815):

a) Was changed from Collector to Residential.

I concur. :good:

b) Was changed from a loopback road into a dead-end road.

It seems the road structure in this area has changed since the last satellite imagery was taken circa 4 years ago. Only a local mapper would know this.

However, this road is not routable. You have to mark the endnode of this road as a routing node to make it routable:
Routing nodes 2.jpg
3. Regarding labels:

a) At MSM we name our roads as Setiabudi 1 J instead of Jalan Setiabudi 1
b) We do not use ALL CAPS for any labels unless they're acronyms e.g. KESAS. This is important when compiling in Mapking format.
c) Taman Setia Budi is fine. :good:

4. You forgot to write a log of your edits

We communicate with other mappers what changes we did to a particular tile using the SVN Log. The dialog box appears just after you run SVN Commit. This log is also used to list down a detailed changelog every time we release our maps so users can see what changes were made to the new map release.

You can view the SVN Log of the whole tiles by right-clicking on your Masmap folder > TortoiseSVN > SVN Log:
SVN Log.png
Please feel free to disagree with my comments. You might have a better reason for mapping the way you do.

Overall, :good:

Hi Bro NTK,

I have experienced the same problem each time I used the uninstaller to uninstall MasmapNPM and have actually reported to Bro Noah to look into it. I suspect there is something wrong with the uninstaller.

To be able to start your MapSource again, you need to clean your OS Registry of the references to the already deleted files of MasmapNPM. The safest way to do it is to Google for MapSetToolkit.exe, download it and use it to uninstall the MasmapNPM.
